MAPS-Mira’s Alliance for Philanthropic Sustainability, is Miss Hall’s School’s latest development in the Horizons department. MAPS is a sector of the Girls Leadership Project (GLP) and today was our first meeting! The group is led by English teacher Anne Rubin, with senior interns Maryam Laly and Lily Crane, and members Petty Chen, Morgan Wagner and Shiloh Frederick. During our first meeting we decided upon our name and mission statement, and we made our first donations! We are focusing on micro-lending to women, and are working through a website called Kiva. The way this micro-lending process works is that we donate a small loan to women in different parts of the world who are looking to improve their lives, usually by ways of expanding their businesses or attending school. This money we give is a loan, so we will have the money returned to us within a few months, which will then enable us to lend it out to another group of women. Our first benefactor was Melinda, a woman from Peru who wants to expand her home firewood business. We gave her a donation of 50 dollars, which, combined with funds from other lenders, will help her achieve that goal. We also gave a total of 50 dollars to two other women, Mariuxi from Equador and Luz from Peru. We invite you to follow us on twitter at mapsmhs and on Facebook at Mira’s Alliance for Philanthropic Sustainability.
